What’s In A Name?
Welcome to
Over a Cup of Coffee
Join me for a cup of coffee and the latest on my writing and life.
A podcaster recently asked me where I got the name Lykkins Lake for the town in the Sheriff Red Mysteries. I thought about it a long time and couldn’t come up with an answer. Sheriff Red has been with me for so many years and so many iterations that some of the details of what I was thinking at the time are lost to the recesses of my brain. If you talk with any author, they will tell you their unique process for naming characters. In The Pines Were Watching I wanted a name that indicated authority. As I struggled to find it, I happened to be reading through the obituaries and the surname Grandgeorge was listed. It was the perfect name for the family carrying their secrets in a deteriorating mansion.
On a lighter note, when I decided Sheriff Red needed a dog, what else could I do but name him Blue? As for how Sheriff Red got her name, you’ll have to read And the Lake Will Take Them to find out ☺.
Number One New Release
Many thanks to all of you who pre-ordered And the Lake Will Take Them. It debuted on Amazon as the number one women’s detective new release. If the fictional poodle Blue were sitting on my lap right now, he’d be wiggling with delight.
Listening to a Professional Read the Book
And the Lake Will Take Them is my first audiobook. Elizabeth Ashby did wonderful work capturing the voice of Sheriff Red. It sent a little shiver up my spine to hear the voice out loud that has lived so long inside my head. She will be doing the audio book on my next Sheriff Red, The Pines Were Watching. It’s available for preorder on Amazon.
Liza and Mrs. Wilkens
The newest Liza and Mrs. Wilkens mystery will be out in late summer. The Secret of Ravens Valley will find the pair in a small town in Southern Minnesota, trying to find out who killed the local librarian. Goldie, the cat, will play a key role.
